Policies and institutions in international migration

Although one third of the Romanian households (approximately two and half millions) have had at least one member gone abroad after 1989, the Romanian institutions have hardly regulated the domain, holding as primary objective a policy of containing the phenomenon. This is one of the main conclusions of "Policies and institutions on international migration: work migration from Romania" survey issued by Soros Foundation Romania.

The Open Society Foundation (OSF) supports the Alburnus Maior campaign and opposes the mining project, considering it to be highly detrimental from the points of view of the sustainable social and economical development, heritage and environment. OSF considers that it is high time Romanian state authorities, both central and local, acted in favor and not against the interests of its citizens.

Roma Inclusion Barometer

45% of Roma population in Romania think of themselves as assimilated to the Romanian culture - that category of Roma people that barely keep in touch with the cultural dimensions of their ethnics, being educated within the spirit of the Romanian culture, reveals the data of the Roma Inclusion Barometer, released by the Open Society Foundation. Approximately 15% of them identify with the "rudari" and the "vatrari" kindred, also relatively assimilated within the culture of the majority. Another 15% identify with some rather traditional branches of the Roma ethnics - the "caldarari"(bucket makers), the "ursari"(bear tamers), the "caramidari" (brick makers) - and the rest of approximately 25% name themselves "just gipsy" or affiliate to another kindred.

Brief Assessment on Romania's Compliance with Some Critical EU Requirements

Romania took some important steps towards its EU integration. Brief assessment on Romania's compliance with some Critical EU requirements - a report issued by the Open Society Foundation together with the Center for Legal Resources and the Resource Center for Roma Communities - presents Romania's achievements in some key areas of activity, at the same time pointing to all the deficiencies that need to be overstepped in the near future. The three NGOs firmly support Romania's joining the EU on January 1, 2007, regardless of the possible special monitoring from the EU. The report discusses some of the institutional dysfunctions ranging from politics and justice system to the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, the situation of the mentally disabled or minority rights. The report also insists on the legislative and institutional deficiencies related to the environmental protection. Finally yet importantly, it presents the ups and downs of the recent public administration reform process.

Archeological study

Environmental Impact Assessment's survey on the initial conditions of the national cultural heritage has been issued by Stantec Consulting, which doesn't hold a Romanian official accreditation in the field of researching, evaluating or preserving mobile or immobile cultural heritage. This raises several question marks around the validity of information and evaluation in the survey. This contains a series of incomplete and inaccurate information, as well as subjective and tendentious considerations, which mislead the correct perception on the importance of Rosia Montana heritage in the national and worldwide context.

Robert Moran's report regarding water and it's quality

This report concentrates on issues regarding the water and the quality of water, issues which are constantly a source of serios, expensive, unpredictable and economic effects in mining areas. The Enviromental Impact Assessment is not comprehensive, is poorly organized and confusing. Generally speaking, one can not establish which are, specifically, the authors - individuals or companies - of the sections and opinions formulated in the study, thus being avoided the natural direct responsability for the conclusions.

Rural Romania looks with hope towards the European Union, but does not know what integration means

Almost one quarter of the inhabitants of Romanian villages endorse the EU integration and two thirds expect a life improvement afterwards, reveal the data of the Rural Eurobarometer, just released to the public by the Open Society Foundation (OSF). Still, the Romanians living in rural areas consider themselves poorly informed on the European Union, on its policies and institutions, and a great majority still has serious difficulties in answering simple questions about the Union. The main source of information about the European Union is the television (named by 58% of the respondents), followed by discussions with relatives, friends, colleagues (24%). 23% of the rural inhabitants state that they are interested in such information.

Rural EuroBarometer

During September 2002 and January 2003 the Open Society Foundation carried out the first edition of the Rural EuroBarometer, with funding support from the European Comission Delegation in Romania. The survey is firstly a quantitative analysis and a fundament for a qualitative analysis of the public opinion within rural areas, where over 50% of Romania's active population live. Through the Rural EuroBarometer the Open Society Foundation intended to research, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the public opinion on the European Union, with a special focus on SAPARD funds. The survey focuses on rural population, insuffieciently informed in this matter. The EuroBarometer identifies certain causes for this situation.
