Public Opinion Barometer - Perceptions on mass media
The Public Opinion Barometer, just released today, June 5, 2006, by the Open Society Foundation reveals that 83% of the Romanians watch television daily, whereas just 12% flick through a central newspaper every day. Local newspapers appear to be much more attractive for the respondents, 17% stating that they read a local newspaper several times a week. Drawing near to television, the highest rating is achieved by news editions which draw the attention of 70% of the viewers each day.

Roma Inclusion Barometer
45% of Roma population in Romania think of themselves as assimilated to the Romanian culture - that category of Roma people that barely keep in touch with the cultural dimensions of their ethnics, being educated within the spirit of the Romanian culture, reveals the data of the Roma Inclusion Barometer, released by the Open Society Foundation. Approximately 15% of them identify with the "rudari" and the "vatrari" kindred, also relatively assimilated within the culture of the majority. Another 15% identify with some rather traditional branches of the Roma ethnics - the "caldarari"(bucket makers), the "ursari"(bear tamers), the "caramidari" (brick makers) - and the rest of approximately 25% name themselves "just gipsy" or affiliate to another kindred.

Rural EuroBarometer
During September 2002 and January 2003, Soros Foundation Romania carried out the first edition of the Rural EuroBarometer, with funding support from the European Comission Delegation in Romania. The survey is firstly a quantitative analysis and a fundament for a qualitative analysis of the public opinion within rural areas, where over 50% of Romania's active population live. Through the Rural EuroBarometer, Soros Foundation Romania intended to research, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the public opinion on the European Union, with a special focus on SAPARD funds. The survey focuses on rural population, insuffieciently informed in this matter. The EuroBarometer identifies certain causes for this situation.

Living abroad on a temporary basis. The Romanians and the economic migration: 1990-2006
Soros Foundation Romania has just released a survey on temporary working migration - Living Abroad on a Temporary Basis - The Economic Migration of Romanians: 1990 - 2006. Over one third of Romania's households, approximately two and a half million citizens, have had at least one member abroad since 1989. 12% of 18 to 59 year old Romanians have worked abroad after 1989. The phenomenon took significant proportions after 2002, as soon as Romanians gained the right to free circulation within Schengen space. Presently, temporarily working abroad is threefold the phenomenon in 2002. The attached document is the full version of the survey, both in Romanian and English.

Public Opinion Barometer: Voting Profiles
This volume is the research report prepared by the project team in cooperation with The Gallup Organization Romania. The content of this report is intended to be an introduction to the research of the subject proposed by the Barometer. The text goes further than merely presenting the percentages of responses and opens a way for a thorough research of many subjects related to media access and consumption in Romania. Rural EuroBarometer: European Values in Romanian Villages
The Rural EuroBarometer: European Values in Romanian Villages is a study prepared by Soros Foundation Romania (SFR) as part of the project with the same name. The study uses mainly the data from an opinion poll, representative for the rural environment, performed as part of the project, and from SFR sources (Public Opinion Barometer, Urban Romania) or external sources (the Eurobarometer series and other studies).

Annual Report 2005
A series of aspects made 2005 a special year for the Soros Foundation Romania. It marked, first of all, the fifteenth anniversary of the Foundation in Romania, an occasion to celebrate and revisit the contribution that George Soros’ vision and financial support, along with the imagination and hard work of his collaborators in Romania, brought to the continuous effort of the Romanian society to break with the hard legacy of the totalitarian past and to join the community of the open, free and democratic societies.

Annual Report 2004
The Soros Foundation implemented 8 programs in 2004, two of which are new initiatives. The Foundation spent USD 3 856 000 on its activities. 40 non-governmental organizations were funded and 189 persons received support through OSF funds. The Foundation organized 9 public events to present the results of its activities.

George Soros was born in Budapest, Hungary, on August 12, 1930. He survived the Nazi occupation of Budapest and left communist Hungary in 1947 for England, where he graduated from the London School of Economics (LSE).
