Romanian Electoral Studies - Newsletter no. 4 Romanian Electoral Studies - Newsletter no. 4

The fourth edition of the Romanian Electoral Studies newsletter finalizes the analysis of pole data gathered early after the EU Parliament elections. The previous editions have centered upon the most relevant approaches on the European elections, on main presidential candidates' supporters, and on the ideology of Romanian voters. The current newsletter focuses on the profile of main political parties' supporters - who are they, what's their opinion on the current state of things in Romania, on institutions and political figures.
CRPE Policy Paper no. 2 CRPE Policy Paper no. 2
2009-11-24
The meeting of the European Council scheduled to take place on 18-19 of June in Brussels is not an ordinary one. The current issues set on its agenda will be most probably eclipsed by the election of the new President of the European Commission. Nevertheless, with a newly elected European Parliament and with the not too distant perspective of Lisbon Treaty entering into force, there is a strong will to postpone this decision up until October, when the current mandate of Jose Manuel Barroso formally expires. So far he is the sole official candidate for the position he had held until now. Moreover, he addressed the EU leaders with an appeal to nominate already now the new President, being backed by Sweden, the country to assume EU presidency. However, nothing is certain and one may have the surprise to watch a race with one candidate who is loosing.
CRPE Policy Memo no. 4 CRPE Policy Memo no. 4
2009-11-17
This report is not unlike a Russian nested doll, as it speaks to several audiences. On the one hand, this is about experts on agricultural and European policies. On the other hand, it is about the journalists, politicians, activists, students and the general public who need to have the information put into context in order to understand the dilemmas posed to Romania by the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. We have tried to make the report accessible as well as informational, in order to trigger and nurture a serious debate in Romania on a subject that will directly impact the 30% of the country’s population involved in agriculture and indirectly just about everyone.

2009-11-17
Sweden took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union at the beginning of this month. The expectations are high from the Swedish government, especially after the Czech presidency was nearly unanimously characterized as incoherent. In its turn, the Swedish government upped the ante by choosing the slogan Taking on the challenges and announcing an ambitious agenda. This document is part of a series through which the Romanian Center for European Policies analyses the EU’s immediate agenda and suggests stances to be adopted by the Romanian government

CRPE Policy Brief no. 2 CRPE Policy Brief no. 2
2009-11-17
This policy brief brings into discussion two major issues on the European Union’s agenda – the climate changes and the new institutional design of the EU. The concern for countering climate changes has found a high degree of attention among the EU member states compared to other big polluters as the United States or China. But even inside the EU the things are far from being simple. As for the new institutional design of the EU, it comes to be a “living dream” after Czech Republic ratified the Lisbon Treaty, opening the path to a Union institutionally adapted to the last wave of enlargement.
