The Soros Foundation Romania alongside with the Departament of Geonomic Sciences of the Romanian Academy, organized on Friday, December 11, 2009, «The Sustainable Development problems within the context of Romanian mineral resources exploitation» workshop.
Taking into account the exhaustion of un-renewable resources and the accentuate climate changes, the sustainable development concept is one of the ultimate principles to be found in public policies or enactments. Economic development and the requisiteness for environmental protection need to be pacified concomitantly with the identification of social development alternatives.
The event brought into discussion findings of the «Mining and Sustainable Development in Romania» Report and «Participatory Processes in drafting Mining Legislation: Experience from around the world» Report, carried out by the Soros Foundation with the support of Marta Miranda, international independent expert.
The reports have been commissioned by the Soros Foundation to Mrs.Marta Miranda in the frame of SFR program «Mining in the context of sustainable development», through which SFR wants to improve the legal framework in the context of responsible management in the mineral resources field.
Among the participants there were members of the Romanian Academy, professors from universities from Bucharest, Iași, Petroșani, representatives of research centers and institutes, representatives from public authorities: Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Economy, National Agency for Mineral Resources, Environmental Protection Agency, as well as representatives of Soros Foundation Romania.
