Public Interest and the Resource Curse

Objective
The program's objective is to raise awareness among local and central authorities, but within the local communities and civil society as well, in resource rich areas about the necessity to design local sustainable development strategies for the exploitation of natural resources.

The foundation would like also to develop the ability of local population in resource rich areas to influence the decisional process. Concern and protection of the public interest and public consensus building would be the main principles of our strategy.

The foundation intends to advocate for transparency and accountability of central authorities' management of natural resources. We will start by monitoring the legality of decisions made by authorities and expose alleged corruption, infringements to individual rights and abuses against the local communities.

The Foundation will also advocate for the design of sustainable development strategies, within a strong and appropriate legal frame work.

We will produce relevant expertise by issuing an assessment of the situation that will make use of collected data and highlight the legislative and functional weaknesses to be considered by empowered authorities.
Rosia Montana is just the first case study. Other regions of the country affected by the lack of sustainable strategies for the management of natural resources are the North East of Romania, in terms of forestry exploitation or the Danube Delta or Black Sea shore.
