George Soros' statement on Rosia Montana (11 February 2009)
Recently my name has been mentioned in connection with a mining project in Rosia Montana, Romania. In order to set the record straight I am issuing the following statement.
I have no financial interest in the gold mine in Rosia Montana, either through Gabriel Resources or Newmont, nor is it my intention to have any such interest in the future.
I did have a conversation with Joel Bell, a representative of Gabriel Resources, in which I encouraged him to seek a constructive solution in Rosia Montana that would meet the legitimate demands of opponents to the mine.
I do not, however, have any firm views on what the correct solution is and in any case I don't impose my personal views on the Soros Foundation Romania, which has its own board and acts autonomously. I respect the Foundation's work on transparency, good governance and rule of law.
