Open Letter addressed to the Central Political Bureau of the National Liberal Party
To Mr. Crin Antonescu, President of The National Liberal Party
Bucharest, the 25th of January 2010
Mr. Crin Antonescu,
Members of the Central Political Bureau,
We are writing to you in order to draw you attention to a situation that is at least alarming, concerning the activity of the liberal MEPs.
We were informed that tomorrow, January 26th 2010, the MEP Adina Valean organizes a debate in favor of the mining project Rosia Montana, in which the main actors will be the representatives of the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation.
Furthermore, it appears that this debate was organized against the correct informing procedures of the European parliamentary group Mrs. Adina Valean is part of and in a complete lack of transparency towards the public in Romania, taking into consideration the fact that no informing about this activity organized by Mrs. Valean was transmitted to the Romanian mass-media.
We are sure that you are aware of the controversies concerning the respecting of the rule of law principles in the Rosia Montana case, as well as of the hundreds of voices coming from the civil society, that have joined the community.
Considering these controversies, we are shocked by the lack of transparency proven by the National Liberal Party MEP Adina Valean in organizing this debate in which no critical voices of the mining project proposed by Gabriel Resources for Rosia Montana were invited. We would like to remind you that among these critical voices are tens of NGOs, The Romanian Orthodox Church, The Romanian Academy and over 1.000 people and cultural institutions in Romania and abroad.
The Soros Foundation Romania bitterly remarks that the lack of transparency it reproached to the Romanian state concerning the Rosia Montana mining project is a disease that spreads inclusively over the “revolution of common sense” that you decided to bring into the Romanian politics. We are indignant and shocked seeing the generalization of practices that are obviously against common sense happening exactly within the party which aimed to make a different kind of politics.
We remind you that the 2 million of Romanians who voted for you in December 2009, voted for decisional transparency and for respecting the legal provisions and the rule of law, not for protecting private economic interests to the prejudice of the community’s interests.
Still confident in the “revolution of common sense”,
Gabriel Petrescu
Executive Director
